Coraline and Aunt Louise had gotten ready together, laughing and chatting as they did. She thanked God once again that her aunt was so much more fun than her father.
The women were just adding the final touches on their ensembles when the man himself burst into the room, grinning from ear to ear.
"Now who are these fine ladies? I could have sworn I left my modest and meek wife and niece in this room not two hours ago. What have you done with them?" He cried in dramatic surprise.
Aunt Louise kissed him soundly and assured him they were those same ladies, but a hint of rouge and a nice dress surely did make her feel like a new woman. And with that, they were off, on their way to the hub of joyful noise that was Lowell Hall.
Coraline knew she was being terribly sinful--she'd have to go and see young Nicodemus tomorrow for reconciliation. She shouldn't be out 'cavorting with devils' while her father was off at the bedside of a dying baron. She shouldn't have lied and promised she'd be back at Aunt's house before her midnight curfew. She shouldn't have burst into giggles with Aunt Louise as soon as the door was shut behind him. She shouldn't be out dancing with commoners at all when she was only half a step away from being a proper lady herself. She just couldn't resist.
But surely God himself must know how good it felt to be free? Surely He himself had inspired humans to create such music, to want to move when their ears heard the joyful sound? The music streamed into the street even through closed windows and doors, calling out to Coraline's soul as she stepped down from the carriage. Uncle Cai let them into the building, where they were immersed in the warmth and noise of a hundred or more people having a fantastic time.
Coraline stood near the wall for a moment, watching the dancing crowd with a growing smile. The thrum of the bass and fiddle hummed through the hall, and the floor vibrated with the steady stomp of feet to the rhythm. Before she knew it, she was tapping her foot and clapping her hands along with the others, laughing as the song reached its zenith and the dancers whirled even faster.
All too soon the song was over, but then, that was even better--a new song was starting up. She could tell it was going to be a good one by the chatter that started to buzz around the room. Now the only problem was that she was going to need a partner if she wanted to dance…
